One of the most iconic treks in São Tomé: primary rainforest, volcanic scenery and a landmark like no other
Pico Cão Grande is the most recognisable landmark in São Tomé: a volcanic needle rising 663 metres from the southern rainforest. This trek takes you through primary jungle to its base, a route that many travellers consider the highlight of their entire trip.
The hike runs six to seven hours depending on pace and weather. The terrain is moderate but the environment is demanding: primary rainforest is humid, the paths can be slippery, and conditions change quickly. Good physical fitness is important. This is not a casual walk, but it is achievable for anyone who prepares properly and takes it at a sensible pace.
A local guide leads the full route. Lunch is taken at a local restaurant. Water and snacks are included throughout the day.
The route passes through some of São Tomé's most intact primary rainforest. Dense canopy, endemic vegetation, rivers and the sounds of the jungle define the experience from the start.
As the trail nears the volcanic needle, the landscape opens and the scale of Pico Cão Grande becomes clear. This is the centrepiece of the hike: a geological formation found nowhere else on earth.
A proper sit-down lunch is included at a local restaurant on the route, giving you time to rest before the return.
Water and snacks are provided throughout the day by your guide.
